Long track skating, Ghiotto silver at the World Championships in the 5000m

The 29-year-old from Vicenza brings Italy back to the podium eight years after Francolini’s 2nd place in the mass start. Fifteenth place for the other blue Giovannini

Davide Ghiotto is the new 5000m world runner-up in speed skating. On the ice of the Thjalf Arena in Heerenveen, Holland, a mecca for long track skating, the blue conquered his first medal ever at the World Championships, bringing Italy back to the podium eight years after the second place achieved by Fabio Francolini in the mass start.

On the attack

Ghiotto, author of an attacking race with a slight drop in the last kilometre, finished the race in 6’11″12, just 2″18 behind the winner, the great Dutch favorite Patrick Roest (6’08″94 ) which returned the Netherlands to the top of the distance world after six years (the victories of compatriot Sven Kramer from 2012 to 2017). Bronze went to Belgian Bart Swings (6’13″06), the second world championship medal after bronze in 2021 in the mass start. Andrea Giovannini ended his race in 15th position with a time of 6’26”52. The 29-year-old from Trentino achieved one of the best times of the season over the distance, an encouraging sign in view of the mass start.
