Long-term parking on Texel residents: “Suburbs are inconvenienced by tourists”

Parking in Den Helder will come under further pressure. That is what Samen Actief Senioren fears in Den Helder. The political party is concerned about the planned expansion of the blue parking zone in the city. “If Texel visitors are not allowed to park here for longer than three hours, they will go to the suburbs,” says Nico de Vos of Samen Actief Senioren. “We are hospitable here, but no car park for Texel.”

Traffic flow to the TESO ferry service has been a problem for Den Helder for many years. Throughout the year and especially in the summer, the city suffers from traffic jams on a daily basis. There will soon be a parking problem, says Nico de Vos of Samen Actief Senioren. “I work at Willemsoord. At least 80 percent of the cars here are from day trippers for Texel. They ask me if they can park here for a day or longer.”

Mess

At present, tourists are still allowed to park at the Willemsoord wharf or along the canal towards the harbor. “They park the car, remove the bicycles and go to the boat. That will of course change if the municipality introduces short-term parking, the blue zone, everywhere.” Where are they going then? “To the suburbs. We are afraid that residents there will no longer be able to park their cars. It will be a mess.”

transferium

“I think they haven’t thought it through properly, because the parking problem is now only being moved,” said De Vos. Years ago it was suggested to transferium to be built just outside the city. De Vos: “Yes, this has been discussed for years. A large parking lot at the Kooypunt. There people can get on the bus to the boat. It is now in the program of the new city council and it is time that they hit the button.”

Research by NH Nieuws together with Kieskompas showed in the run-up to the elections in March this year that parking problems and the traffic flow to Texel are in the Top 4 of Hot Hang Irons. Residents of Den Helder could propose topics for the Electoral Indicator for the Kieskompas.
