From the point of view of Berlin’s Senator for Culture, Jou Chialo, the Long Night of the Museums is an “event of cultural diversity and encounters”.

The event has long grown into one of Berlin’s most successful traditions, said the CDU politician on Saturday at the opening of the Long Night, according to the speech manuscript.

According to Chialo, people who otherwise rarely go to the museum also take part in the Long Night. “The format is a valuable building block in the goal of making museums even more relevant for individuals and opening them up to a broad audience,” said Chialo in front of the Altes Museum on Museum Island, which also functions as the center of the night.

As a very music-loving person, he is personally particularly pleased with this year’s motto “Sounds of Berlin”. For the Long Night of Museums, the around 75 participating museums chose a special focus. Until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, “a sonorous journey through the nocturnal museum landscape” should be possible with one ticket for more than 700 events. This form of cooperation between many museums with shuttle buses and general tickets is considered a Berlin invention.

More than 100 cities around the world have now taken up the successful concept and implemented it in their own forms. In Paris, for example, the “Nuit blanche” is celebrated, Amsterdam organizes a “Stichting N8”.
