Lollapalooza Argentina 2024 is just around the corner. On March 15, 16 and 17, Blink-182, Feid, SZA, Sam Smith, Arcade Fire, Limp Bizkit, Hozier, YSY A, The Offspring, and Thirty Seconds to Mars, among others, will perform at the San Isidro Hippodrome. The opening of the ninth edition of the festival in our pampas will have Blink-182, the pioneers of pop-punk who will arrive in the country for the first time with their original line-up. In tune with sound, that same day the Canadians will play arcade Fire, sliding between punk funk and electronica with nods to disco; and to complete the punkrocker combo the day will offer the show of The Offspringand Jaden, the young artist who has been working with Travis Barker, drummer of Blink-182.
The 16th is headed by SZA, Sam Smith and Phoenix, and the locals of Miranda!. A highly poppy second date after an opening much more designed for the pogo. And the closure? An eclectic day that has everything from the metal rap of Limp Bizkit, through the romantic Irish composer Hozier, the alternative rock of Thirty Seconds to Mars (Jared Leto’s band), and the provocative rhymes of the Colombian Feid, formerly known for composing songs for other reggaeton artists, such as “Ginza” by J Balvin and “Mamita” by CNCO.
On the trap side, the local credit will be YSY A; rock is added Winona Riders and Zebra Woman;and the Pacifica girls. The Spanish Saiko in urban register; the Chilean Jere Klein; the Peruvian JAZE; and Nsqk, the Mexican who fuses trap with electronics. And on the electro stage there will be Diplo; the French duo The Blaze; the Australian house icon, Dom Dolla; DJ and producer MK. Separate paragraph for Cristian Castro’s show, a Kitsch wink among so much cool stuff.
Marketing
The “Lolla” phenomenon started in the ’90s, when the leader of the grunge band Jane’s Addiction, Perry Farrell, came up with a great set for himself and other friends. The name of the meeting arose in an unusual way, watching an old episode of “The Three Stooges.” The show became a tour, and that tour became an icon of rock culture. For seven years, Lollapalooza toured North America with a growing cast: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, The Ramones, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine among others.
The festival grew so much that Farrell sold the brand to the William Morris agency, who did not know how to manage it, and closed it in 1998. Farrell relaunched it in 2003 in Chicago, and in 2010, with the help of the American company C3, internationalized. So He arrived for the first time in Argentina in 2014become much more than a rock arena.
The festival has gastronomic spaces, an area with workshops and activities for children, and a recycling and ecological awareness program. He founded a phenomenon that other festivals that also take place in the country emulate, such as Primavera Sound or the Good vibeswhich filled Ciudad Universitaria on February 24, with He Killed a Motorized Policeman and Getting to know Russia as top rock references, but also with a large, highly vegetarian foodie pole, and an electronic stage coordinated by the clothing brand Luxo which included Pyura, Balaciano, Sol Porro, Sound Process, Lulu Menayed and Djs Pareja.
Year
As far as international visits are concerned, 2024 promises much less than 2022, but also than 2023. In any case, in these months they already visited us Slash (the Guns N’ Roses guitarist performed at the Movistar Arena with his “The river is rising” tour), and Manu Chao (he was at the legendary Obras Stadium before passing through Córdoba and Rosario). But Morrisey canceled his visit to the country for the second time in January, and 2024 is shaping up to be far from those ten Coldplay shows in June 2022, or the Taylor Swift phenomenon last year.
What’s left? The metal of Megadeth, who will give two shows in Buenos Aires on April 13 and 14 as part of their “Crush the World Tour” (tickets are sold out for both dates). And in an octagenarian but active plan, Tom Jones, who will perform on April 15 at the Movistar Arena: he hasn’t seen our country in 7 years, and he promises a show in which he will cover his 60 years of experience.
For the teen public, at the other end, a visit is expected towards the end of April Hermanos Jonas, a decade after their last local show. They will return to the country as part of their “Five Albums” tour. One Night. The World Tour”, which reviews 20 years of career, to meet again with his fans in three shows at the Movistar Arena: April 25, 26 and 27.
And along the same lines, Louis Tomlinson It will be presented on May 18 at the Vélez Sarsfield stadium. The British, former member of One Direction comes to promote his latest album with the “Faith in the future world tour”, which has already visited Europe and the United States, where it sold out.
Latinas
April will be the strong month in the first semester before the desert of big winter shows. And the recital of Karol G, on April 26 at the Vélez Sarsfield stadium. The Colombian arrives as part of her Latin American tour “Tomorrow will be beautiful”, and ticket prices range between $28,000 and $65,000 via Ticketek (not including the cost of service).
A great year for Latinas in pop music, which includes local references: Nicki Nicole returns to the Movistar Arena on March 9 after having sold out 7 shows and bringing together more than 70 thousand people in 2023. And María Becerra is preparing to explode the River Plate Stadium on March 22 and 23. The “Nena de Argentina” who received 2024 singing in the legendary Times Square in New York before 50 thousand people, will present her self-titled album live with sold-out tickets (new tickets are expected to appear on Allaccess).
AND Emilia Mernes It also has a packed 2024: it will be on April 6, 7, 19, 20, 21 and 23, and May 3, 29, 30 and 31 at the Movistar Arena; and on October 12 it will build its first football stadium in Vélez Sarsfield. After breaking a historical record by selling out 10 Movistar in 10 hours with the presentation of her second album, “.mp3”, the Argentine who has just toured Spain with her boyfriend Duki, seeks to fight for the local podium with Lali, who will prepare a new album this year.
Scene. Without further confirmation, the second half is pure speculation. Names like Bad Bunny, Adele, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga or Shakira, Lana del Rey and Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and AC / DC come up.
The rumors about the Rolling Stones have been proven false, and other internationals could perhaps come as part of a festival at the end of the year: Green Day, Lorde, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars or The Killers. We will see everything in this year of crisis: a possibility for the emerging local scene, part of which has already signed up precisely for Lolla.
Nenagenix, the Buenos Aires quintet that is a reference for the alternative scene, shines there; Fin del Mundo, the Patagonian band with a post-rock vibe; the electronic duo from La Plata Peces Raros; Julieta Ordorica, Milagros Ugarte and Fermín Ugarte with their projects (Babeblade, Blair and Fermín); the already named Pacifica girls (viral on TikTok for their covers of The Strokes); and more. The fuel also for future festivals, with venues available and even accessible to producers, in a year that appears, a priori, lean compared to the recent past.
