Locks at Bovenkarspel and Hoorn open again after storm Isha: a day earlier than expected

The lock at the Broekerhaven in Bovenkarspel and the Grote Sluis in Hoorn are open again. Due to storm Isha and the fear of high water, they were closed as a precaution by the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board. Now that the peak is over, shipping can use the locks again.

The lock at Broekerhaven was closed after the previous high water problems only just opened againwhen Friday the doors closed again. The same happened at the Grote Sluis in Hoorn at the request of the harbor master.

According to the ANP, the water had dropped in the past period, but the level was still (too) high. Because the wind increased on Friday and the water levels of the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer were expected to rise, the decision was already made to close some locks in the province.

Locks open a day earlier than expected

The expectation was that the doors could open again tomorrow, but in the end the consequences of storm Isha turned out not to be too bad and the water board decided to open the locks again today.
