Local residents shocked by the Cruquius fire: “Flames and bangs were frightening”

The enormous fire that raged in Cruquius yesterday afternoon, completely destroying a large commercial building, made a great impression on local residents. A fire broke out at the storage shed just after 3 p.m quickly the flames shot out of the roof, a large black plume of smoke appeared and countless explosions were heard. Large consignments of deodorant cans were stored in the building, which exploded en masse due to the high temperatures.

Local resident Stan Geerling was working at home when he was startled by the bang. “I went outside and saw that building ablaze,” he says. “Because of the explosions, I wondered what was stored inside. It was quite frightening, also because the flames were very high.” Nimko Lodewijk, who has a company near the seat of the fire, also viewed the conflagration with some care. “We were afraid that the fire would spread to our building. Fortunately, we were spared that.”

“Somewhere I braced myself for a huge explosion, but luckily it didn’t happen”

Local resident Piet Brouwer also had to blink a few times when he saw the enormous conflagration. “The fire was unbelievably large and especially the smoke was very intense. It was pitch black, the plume enormous. And an awful lot of bangs.”

Neighbor Geerling’s thoughts went back in time when he saw the fire and heard the explosions. “I am of the age that I experienced the fireworks disaster in Enschede and somewhere I braced myself for that big explosion. But luckily it didn’t happen.”

False start for two companies

A recently completed storage shed was completely reduced to ashes, despite the fire brigade trying to extinguish the fire. An adjacent company, specialized in wrapping cars, was also badly damaged and must be considered lost. Local resident Geerling sympathizes with the owners. “It is sad, especially for the owner of the car company. That had just been completed. He can start over.”
