Local hero Hering is seventh over 800 m

Local hero Christina Hering delivered a courageous performance at the European Athletics Championships in Munich over 800 m.

Cheered on by the audience in the Olympic Stadium, the Munich native, who surprisingly made it into her first international final, ran in the lead up to the 600m mark, after 2:00.82 minutes she finished seventh. Olympic silver medalist, vice world champion and top favorite Keely Hodgkinson (Great Britain) secured the European title in 1:59.04 minutes.

Renelle Lamote (1:59.49/France) won silver, Poland’s Anna Wielgosz (1:59.87) took bronze.

Majtie Kolberg (Ahrweiler) didn’t get through with her season best of 2:01.20 minutes in the semifinals. Tanja Spill (Dormagen) was eliminated in the preliminary heat.

The last time a German runner won a medal over the 800 m was in 1990. Sigrun Wodars had won gold for the GDR in Split at the time.
