With her Tina Turner costume for Halloween, Lizzo chose to commemorate the artist who died this year.
In an Instagram post from October 29th, the singer, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, shows herself wearing a yellow-blonde, fringed wig and a sequined stage outfit that immediately makes it clear who she is trying to imitate. “In honor of Tina Turner,” Lizzo logically titled the post. Behind it she puts a red, burning heart emoji.

On May 24, 2023, when the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” died at the age of 83, Lizzo remembered the musician at her concert in Phoenix. “Today we lost an icon. And I didn’t allow myself to be sad. I didn’t allow myself to cry about it. And I don’t want to do that now because I would much rather celebrate the incredible legend Tina Turner,” said the “About Damn Time” singer on the anniversary of Turner’s death. “As a black girl in a rock band, I wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Lizzo sang the song “Proud Mary,” which was released as a single in 1969.
But apparently Tina Turner isn’t the only “legend” being honored by Lizzo this Halloween. In a second post, the singer – with black, teased hair and a low back neckline – portrays herself as the film character Elvira. The “ruler of darkness” was first portrayed by Cassandra Peterson in the 1988 film of the same name, which tells the story of an extravagant television presenter.
