“Living Legend”: Gorilla Lady Fatou in Berlin Zoo turns 65

A cake made of rice, quark, raspberries and vegetables was given as a gift: The gorilla lady Fatou in the Berlin Zoo has turned 65 years old. According to the zoo, this makes her the oldest gorilla in the world.

The traditional birthday cake is something special for Fatou. “The cake base is made of rice, and we used quark, vegetables and fruit for the decoration,” said district manager Christian Aust on Wednesday. “For her exceptionally old age, Fatou is a very vigorous old lady with a healthy appetite”.

The great ape was brought to the Berlin Zoo when he was about two years old. The 65-year-old is now almost a “living legend”, the zoo said.

Western gorillas are therefore threatened with extinction in their natural habitat – the tropical rainforests. Habitat destruction and hunting have severely decimated the population.
