The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cordially invites you to the event Stronger Together – NATO’s Partnerships† The public event is on February 23, from 4:45 PM to 6:30 PM. Watch the livestream on February 23, 2022.

The program

The program starts with speeches from Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg. They share their views on the role and importance of NATO partnerships. Afterwards there is a discussion with the audience present.

Participating in the interactive panel discussion are: Jaap de Hoop Scheffer (former NATO Secretary General and Minister of Foreign Affairs), Lauren Speranza (Director of the Transatlantic Defense and Security Center for European Policy Analysis), Jonathan Berkshire Miller (Director and Senior Fellow – Macdonald Laurier Institute) and Valbona Zeneli (Chairman Strategic Initiatives Department of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies). Angelien Eijsink acts as moderator.

The main question during the event is: how can partnerships with other countries and organizations strengthen NATO’s clout? And how should NATO invest in this?

About NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an alliance of 30 countries from Europe and North America. Founded in 1949 with the aim of guaranteeing the security and freedom of the member states and promoting stability worldwide. And that alliance may be more important now than ever.

Global threats have grown in recent years. Consider the situation in Russia and Ukraine. And China, which is taking an increasingly assertive stance in the world. We are also seeing new types of threats. For example, due to the lightning-fast developments in the field of cyber.

A safer world is also a safer Netherlands. That is why the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to close cooperation between NATO allies and partners. And to find solutions to diplomatic challenges and threats to international security.

A New NATO Strategic Concept

As the security situation in the world is changing, NATO is also changing with it. An important step is writing a new Strategic Concept. The new Strategic Concept will be adopted at the next NATO summit in Madrid 2022.

A number of events will take place in the run-up to it. NATO Partnerships: Stronger Together is part of several seminars organized by NATO allies. The aim is to collect input from policymakers, experts and partners for the new Strategic Concept. The event in The Hague is organized by Germany and the Netherlands in collaboration with Canada, Finland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
