Successful Emery debut
Liverpool FC have managed to break free after two defeats in the English Premier League. In the away game at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, the ailing Reds prevailed 2-1 (2-0), mainly thanks to star striker Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian scored twice in the first half (11th/40th minute) for coach Jürgen Klopp’s team.

The visitors from Liverpool had luck on their side in London. For his second goal, Salah capitalized on a mistake by Eric Dier, who unluckily headed the ball into his path. The referee did not count a shove in the penalty area by Trent Alexander-Arnold against Ryan Sessegnon as a penalty – at least a controversial decision. In addition, “Spurs” attacker Ivan Perisic first hit the post and later the crossbar. However, Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez also hit the crossbar.

The “Spurs” put Liverpool under strong pressure until the final whistle. Harry Kane (70th) scored the well-deserved goal after submitting substitute Dejan Kulusevski, who made his comeback after an injury break. Tottenham are still without top striker Heung-min Son. The former HSV professional had to undergo an operation after a fracture in his eye.
On the relegation zone: Hasenhüttl at FC Southampton before the end
In the Premier League table, Liverpool improved to eighth place, while Tottenham slipped to fourth after suffering a somewhat unfortunate third defeat in their fourth league game. Southampton FC, who lost 4-1 (0-1) to Newcastle United in front of their home crowd, are now also in a relegation zone. As “The Athletic” reported, ex-Bundesliga coach Ralph Hasenhüttl is facing the end due to the development at the “Saints”.
Southampton’s decision has already been made, although the club initially wanted to wait until the long winter break with a rating. Those responsible want to release the Austrian either during the World Cup break or before the last game before the tournament against Liverpool (4:00 p.m.) next Saturday in Anfield.
With Ronaldo as captain: Manchester United lose 1-3 at Aston Villa
Manchester United have suffered a setback after five games without defeat in the Premier League. The English record champions lost 3-1 (2-1) at Aston Villa with Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI. The new Villa coach Unai Emery celebrated a successful debut.
Former Leverkusen player Leon Bailey (7th minute) and Lucas Digne (11th) put the hosts on course early with their goals at the Villa Park stadium. Man United – without the yellow card suspension Bruno Fernandes for the first time with Ronaldo as captain – came through an own goal by Jacob Ramsey (45th) to the interim goal. Ramsey himself made up for his mistake shortly afterwards (49th).
Man United remain fifth in the Premier League table. Aston Villa, who parted ways with manager Steven Gerrard two weeks ago, improve to 13th place. Emery came from Villarreal FC, with whom he won the Europa League last year.
