Liverpool snapped West Ham Díaz away from FC Porto – ‘Were pretty far’

One of the most expensive winter deals

Attacker Luis Díaz has become one of the most expensive winter transfers of 2021/22 with a transfer fee of 45 million euros, which can increase by a further 15 million euros through bonuses. The 25-year-old Colombian recently switched from FC Porto to FC Liverpool – Premier League rivals West Ham United would also have liked to step in and strengthen their offensive.

“I spoke to Luis Díaz on the phone, we were quite far to sign him from Porto. I don’t know if that influenced Liverpool’s decision but he’s a really good player and we didn’t get him,” said West Ham head coach David Moyes, quoted via “Sky Sports”. “From what I understand Liverpool wanted to sign him in the summer so we figured we’d try to get him in January.”

At least the Reds won the race in the end – and the “Hammers”, who invested 75 million euros in the squad in the summer, got nothing in the transfer winter. Tottenham Hotspur was reportedly on Díaz’s turn. The offensive man played a total of 125 games for FC Porto, in which he scored 41 goals and provided 19 assists.

“Our aim is to sign the best players to improve West Ham. I want us to be better, I don’t want us to be mediocre if I can help it. Sometimes you just have to be patient and hope that we get the right things at the right time and that’s how I make my decisions here, rather than bringing in people who might not really fit the concept.” moyes

West Ham and Moyes battle to qualify for Champions League

Most recently, the sixth-placed team only managed one win from five league games. Qualifying for the Champions League for the first time has become a little more unrealistic, although four points behind fourth place is still possible.

“I’m not giving up to be at the top,” Moyes said combatively. “We’ve been in the top four twice this season, then we’ve slipped again and our plan is to go a third time and stay there. But for that we have to find the best team.”
