New sports director
Six months after leaving VfL Wolfsburg, Jörg Schmadtke is returning to a managerial position. Liverpool FC will fill the vacant post of sports director from the summer with the former goalkeeper, who will then be responsible for the sporting fortunes alongside coach Jürgen Klopp instead of James Ward.
Schmadtke will “bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to a role in which these qualities can only help both him and us,” emphasized Mike Gordon, President of the owner company “FSG”. Liverpool missed out on qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2017/18 and is now facing a major upheaval that Schmadtke is to shape together with Klopp. Roberto Firmino (31), Naby Keïta (28), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (29), James Milner (37) and loanee Arthur Melo (26, Juventus) have already said goodbye. Joel Matip (31) and Thiago (32) are also only tied for one year, and they have hardly been used or have not been used at all.

“While we welcome Jörg, we also have to say a warm goodbye to Julian Ward, who has served us in numerous capacities with tireless diligence, steadfastness and energy, most recently as sporting director,” Gordon said of the previous sporting director, who left the club after eleven years. Ward has held the position that Schmadtke is now taking over since the 2021/22 season. Since then, the former champions and Champions League winners have only been able to win a title in the FA Cup, League Cup and Super Cup.
We can confirm Jorg Schmadtke has been appointed as the club’s new sporting director.
