Liverpool FC will have to do without center forward Alexander Isak for a long time. The 26-year-old suffered an ankle injury and a broken leg in a challenge in Saturday’s game at Tottenham Hotspur. As the Reds also announced, the Swedish international has already undergone surgery. Nothing was communicated about the duration of the outage, but consistent media reports assume at least a few months.
Isak moved from Newcastle United to LFC in the summer for 145 million euros, the fourth-highest transfer fee in football history. Since then he has played 16 games in which he scored three goals and one assist. However, he was not able to fully convince given the high sum paid for him, also because he joined the club late and missed the pre-season preparation.
Isak injury impacting Liverpool’s winter transfer activity?
His injury could also have an impact on the English champions’ transfer activities this winter. Since Mohamed Salah will also be missing for a longer period of time due to the Africa Cup of Nations, the offensive line is currently short-handed. According to The Athletic, Liverpool had already discussed whether another versatile option was needed in attack this season due to the inconsistent form of wingers Salah and Cody Gakpo.
One option is said to be Antoine Semenyo from AFC Bournemouth, who is available for 65 million pounds (a good 74 million euros) due to a release clause in his contract. But Manchester City and Manchester United are also said to be interested in the 25-year-old right winger.

Another option would be to bring Harvey Elliott back from his loan spell at Aston Villa. The 22-year-old hardly gets a chance for the Villans and only played 174 minutes. An option is said to have been integrated into his loan that he would be signed permanently for ten appearances for 35 million pounds (40 million euros). Elliott has not been called up to the matchday squad since November 6th and has appeared in seven games. Liverpool have spent a record €482.9m on new signings so far this season.
