Next win for Jürgen Klopp’s FC Liverpool: The “Reds” beat cup winners and former champions Leicester City at home on Anfield. The gap to the top of the table is still immense.
Liverpool FC celebrated their third consecutive win in the English Premier League. After beating Leicester City 2-0 (1-0) on Thursday evening, the team of German coach Jürgen Klopp is now nine points behind champions Manchester City, who have played one more game. Diogo Jota (34/87) scored twice for the Reds, where Africa Cup finalist Mohamed Salah came on after the hour.
Salah just hits the bar
The Reds took the lead after a corner. Apart from that, the strong Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel could not sufficiently fend off a header from defender Virgil van Dijk – Jota had no trouble with a dust-off. Liverpool missed the best chances in the second half, including Salah only hit the crossbar (78th). Jota made the decision late.
Klopp still had to do without Sadio Mané, who won the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal against Egypt for Salah on Sunday.
Arsenal sniffs the premier class ranks
In the second game of the evening, Arsenal FC celebrated an important victory in the fight for a place in the Champions League. The “Gunners”, who had to do without German goalkeeper Bernd Leno due to a corona infection, won 1-0 (1-0) at Wolverhampton Wanderers and ousted Manchester United from fifth place.
Defender Gabriel (25th) scored the decisive goal, striker Gabriel Martinelli saw the yellow-red card in the 69th minute after an unsportsmanlike act.
