Primoz Roglic starts in the red. The Slovenian cyclist from Jumbo-Visma won the fourth stage on Tuesday, from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Laguardia over more than 152 kilometers. It was the first stage of this Vuelta on Spanish soil. The first three stages were held in the Netherlands.
In those days, the leader’s jersey was already for Jumbo-Visma, which had won the team time trial in Utrecht on the opening day. Robert Gesink, Mike Teunissen and Edoardo Affini were successively the leaders in the standings. Roglic relieved his Italian teammate on Tuesday. The Slovenian has won the last three editions of the Vuelta a España.
The sprint in Laguardia was slightly uphill. It was just too much for Mads Pedersen, the former world champion who sprinted to second place ahead of Spaniard Enric Mas. Wilco Kelderman was the first Dutchman in ninth place. In the standings, Roglic has a 13-second lead over his American teammate Sepp Kuss. Britain’s Ethan Hayter follows at 26 seconds.
