Trudeau promises Ukraine military aid and F-16 instructors

Canada will help train pilots and maintenance technicians for the F-16s that Ukraine will soon have available. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this in a speech to a gathered meeting of the Canadian parliament. Also in the audience was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is visiting Canada.

Trudeau said it would support Ukraine for the long term. So he promised the next three years for 650 million Canadian dollars (452 million euros) in military aid to deliver. He pledged, among other things, fifty Canadian-made military vehicles, including vehicles for the transport of wounded.

The Canadian Prime Minister paid numerous compliments to the Ukrainian president, his wife Olena Zelenska and the Ukrainians. According to Trudeau, the country is resisting with “lion’s courage.”for which the world can find no better inspiration than our friend who is in our house today.”

Zelensky thanked Canada for promised help, the support the country has received so far and for the way Ukrainians have been received in the country. He also asked the country for support in efforts to hold Russia legally responsible for the war.

According to Zelensky, Canada has historically been on the right side. “This is not just the legacy of history, this is the legacy of character.” The president said Canada and Ukraine are the same in this regard. “Freedom will conquer. Justice will conquer. You can be sure of us in this, for you know of yourselves that you would never submit to evil either.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a commitment from President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington for “a small number” of so-called ATACMS long-range missiles. The American news channel ‘NBC’ writes this based on several government sources.

It was previously announced that Ukraine can count on a new American aid package, but not for the time being on the missiles with a range of 300 kilometers. Although its delivery in the future was not ruled out. Zelensky had been lobbying the US for the ATACMS missiles for months.

Washington is reluctant to supply these long-range missiles because they could allow Ukraine to target Russian territory and thus involve the US more directly in the conflict. Moscow had already said that with the delivery of such missiles, Washington would “cross a red line.”

According to an earlier report from the news agency ‘Reuters’, the US would now like to give a boost to Kiev’s counter-offensive with the delivery of the missiles.

Ukrainian troops will not let cold and bad weather conditions stop them in the coming months in their attempt to retake the city of Bachmut in the east of the country, Zelensky said during a call with several American media. The president says he still believes in a successful reconquest of the fiercely fought-over city, which fell into Russian hands at the beginning of this year.

He said there are also concrete plans to liberate two other cities from Russian occupation, although he did not say which cities were involved. “But we have a very comprehensive plan,” Zelensky said.

According to the president, the Russians have suffered heavy losses and Putin’s army needs a break. “But Ukraine will not stop in the meantime.”
