Live TV on Netflix? Provider plans new function

After things didn’t go as well as usual at Netflix recently, the streaming service is now apparently working on a new function: live television.

Hardly any other area has developed as rapidly in recent years as streaming. Market leader Netflix itself is the best example of this. Starting in the 90s as an online media library to an omnipresent streaming platform including games – a lot has happened in between. Now the provider seems to want to take the next step and is working on a solution that will enable live television on Netflix.

Netflix is working on new live TV feature

Recently there was less good news for Netflix: For the first time in many years, the number of subscriptions was declining. The streaming service then announced changes to the program. The new motto should be fewer in-house productions and more quality. Netflix has now confirmed to Deadline that they are also working on a technical innovation. Live streaming is the keyword here.

According to Netflix, the project is still in the early stages of development. Nevertheless, the scenario of Netflix with live television is already exciting. In the truly competitive streaming market, it’s increasingly difficult to position yourself well. Competitors like Disney+, for example, have their own blockbuster studio behind them and thus the exclusive rights to large series like Marvel. Netflix has in the meantime established its own names such as “Stranger Things” or “Bridgerton”, but of course the service still lacks the mainstay of cinema, if only financially. Live television could further set Netflix apart from the competition.

What could we expect?

Netflix didn’t go into detail about Deadline. There hasn’t been an official announcement yet either. With a live function, the streaming service would of course compete even more clearly with linear television – a concept that works with RTL+ or Joyn, for example, even if these platforms are to a certain extent supplements to the usual TV program.

It is not yet known what will be shown on the live program. But we’re talking primarily about unscripted shows and stand-up specials. Live voting as part of talent shows would also be conceivable in this scenario. In addition, formats such as the “Netflix Is A Joke” festival could run via a live function. Live broadcasts of reunions of well-known series such as the recent “Selling Sunset” would also be conceivable.
