LIVE Time Sven Kramer doesn’t seem enough for medal | Olympics

The three Dutchmen are early in the program. Kramer even opens the section with a ride against Viktor Hald Thorup from Denmark. In the fifth stage, just before the mopping break, Patrick Roest has to raise the bar for the other favorites when he takes on the Italian Andrea Giovannini. Immediately after the break Jorrit Bergsma was involved in the track with the Japanese Seitaro Ichinohe in the track next to him. After that it is a long wait for Ted-Jan Bloemen (stage 9) and Van der Poel against Bart Swings (stage 10), among others.

Sven Kramer

Sven Kramer immediately distanced himself from his opponent, the Dane Viktor Hald Thorup. After a good start, his lap times stabilized at around 29.7 seconds with an occasional spike. However, with three laps to go, he scored his first 30’s.

He failed to return to the 29’ers. He eventually finished with 6.17.04. The way Kramer ran his last meters showed that he suspected that no medal was waiting for him.

Patrick Rust

The dreamed successor of Sven Kramer was Patrick Roest. With three world titles all-round, he has partly succeeded, because he has not yet won any major titles in the individual distances. Where in recent years he has always misunderstood from the favorite role, he has now become the challenger. Perhaps the 26-year-old skater thrives on that.

Roest will therefore be the first of the real favorites in the section to take action in the 5 kilometers. He’s even in before the mop break after stage five. Yet in Andrea Giovannini he has an opponent who is able to set a time below 6.10 on a highland track. In short, that is an opponent that could be of use to him during the race.

Jorrit Bergsma

Of the three Dutchmen, Jorrit Bergsma has achieved the least top time at 5000 meters in his career. But he is the reigning Dutch champion at the second longest distance. Moreover, he already won bronze in this part eight years ago.

In the run-up to the Games, he announced that he would in any case look fresher than ever, partly thanks to EMDR therapy. “In recent years I have underperformed a number of races due to the tension and a lack of sleep. Before an important race it’s good to have tension, it keeps you sharp. But if you also have it at night, your adrenaline stock is exhausted when you get to the start. I had quite a bit of trouble with that.”
