VfL Wolfsburg has only lost one of the last 14 home games against VfB Stuttgart (all in the Bundesliga), with 0-2 in December 2021 under Florian Kohfeldt. There were also 12 wins and one draw. Wolfsburg won the last home game against VfB 3-2 in October 2022.
For the first time in the Bundesliga, VfL Wolfsburg remained winless in the first six games of the second half of the season (D5 L1), and in total the Lower Saxony team has been without a win for eight games (D6 L2) – the longest negative streak for the Wolves since November 2021 to January 2022 (9 games under Florian Kohfeldt).
With just 25 points after 23 games, VfL Wolfsburg is playing its weakest Bundesliga season in six years – in 2017/18 it was one point less at the same time, and at the end of the season they went into relegation, in which the Wolves held their own against Holstein Kiel.
VfB Stuttgart is playing its best Bundesliga season with 47 points from the first 23 games. Previously, the Swabians had only had as many points (converted to the three-point rule) at the time of comparison in the 1982/83 season and ended up at the end of the season Third place.
VfL Wolfsburg gave up 17 points after taking the lead this Bundesliga season, which is only bettered by Borussia Mönchenglabdach (23). Most recently, the Wolves led twice in the 2-2 draw in Frankfurt, and the first half of the season with VfB Stuttgart was also lost 1-3 after leading 1-0.
VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart, along with TSG Hoffenheim and FC Augsburg, are the only teams that did not keep a clean slate in the Bundesliga in 2024. In 2024, only Bayer 04 Leverkusen allowed fewer shots per game (an average of 8) than Stuttgart (10) and Wolfsburg (11, like Bayern).
Under Sebastian Hoeneß, VfB Stuttgart won the previous two Bundesliga top games on Saturday evening (2-1 in Frankfurt, 2-0 against Bremen this season). VfL Wolfsburg, in turn, is playing its first Saturday evening game under Niko Kovac – VfL’s last top BL game was a 0-2 against VfB Stuttgart on December 11, 2021.
VfL Wolfsburg’s Kevin Behrens is the only player to have scored for two different clubs this Bundesliga season: four times for Union Berlin and most recently for the first time for Wolfsburg. He ended a lull of 19 goalless BL appearances in Frankfurt. He scored all five BL goals this season with his head – only Harry Kane (6) tops that.
VfB Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy scored four goals in two Bundesliga appearances against VfL Wolfsburg; he only scored more often against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (5 goals in 5 appearances). In the first half of the season against Wolfsburg he scored all three of Stuttgart’s goals – all three after the break; it was the first flawless BL hat-trick by a VfB player since Cacau in February 2010 against 1. FC Köln (5-1).
VfB Stuttgart’s Sebastien Hoeneß is about to play his 100th Bundesliga game as coach – he has collected 149 points in the 99 games so far. Hoeneß won the last four Bundesliga games against VfL Wolfsburg – he only had a longer winning streak against 1. FC Köln (5 wins between 2020 and 2023).
