In the opening match against hosts Qatar at the Al Bayt Stadium, a brace from Ecuador’s record goalscorer Enner Valencia cleared things up after just over half an hour and was ultimately responsible for the historically first opening defeat by a World Cup host. After beating a surprisingly weak Qatar, La Tri face their first real test of the tournament today. A point win against the favored Dutch would already be considered a success for the South Americans. Regardless of today’s result on the last day of the group stage against Sénégal, the squad from Ecuador has a possible place in the round of 16 in their own hands.

The Dutch managed a 2-0 win against what is probably their strongest competitor for group victory, Sénégal. In an uneventful and balanced game, shooting star Cody Gakpo gave his team a late 1-0 lead after De Jong’s preparatory work. Shortly before the final whistle of the game, substitute ex-Werder midfielder Davy Klaassen made it 2-0.
