The Danes are currently one place behind Germany in tenth place in the IIHF world rankings. Most recently, the two nations met in the preliminary round at the 2022 World Cup in Helsinki, where the DEB selection narrowly retained the upper hand 1-0 thanks to a goal by Marc Michaelis. Most of the players are employed in the domestic league or the Swedish Eliteserien, but three faces might also look familiar to DEL fans. Christian Wejse, Niklas Andersen and Nicholas B. Jensen currently play for the Fischtown Pinguins. With Heinz Ehlers, the Danes have had a coach since 2019, who was once active for the Augsburg Panthers and the Berlin Capitals.

Coach Söderholm sees this cup primarily as a casting for the 2023 World Cup in Tampere. The Finnish DEB head coach deliberately dispenses with a few proven top performers and has nominated a team of youngsters and returnees, which after three years of being away from the national team also includes the exceptional talent Dominik Bokk. “We can step on the gas a bit on the ice and we’re testing a few new faces,” said Söderholm, adding: “We can give players who have now shown something really good and also grown in character, who we can give a chance. It’s one Kind of a sighting, but it also has a lot to do with tactics.”
