Goodbye!
We say goodbye to the first day of Formula 1 in Monza. It continues on tomorrow, Saturday, with the 3rd practice session and qualifying. We’ll be there live again. Until then!
18:04
Ferrari versus Red Bull
There will probably be another duel between Ferrari and Red Bull in Monza, although one thing is clear: Red Bull will not be on pole due to the grid penalties and Carlos Sainz will not start from first place on Sunday either. The third force was Mercedes, but Lando Norris also showed good laps in the McLaren. Other teams are likely to be less happy with the session. AlphaTauri did not have a driver in the top ten and Aston Martin was also far from the window. Sebastian Vettel did not get past 17th place, Lance Stroll was only 18. The situation is similar with Haas. There, Kevin Magnussen was only able to bring the car to 16th place. Mick Schumacher, who was Magnussen’s draft horse in terms of slipstreaming, was 20th before retiring.

18:00
Carlos Sainz wins the 2nd practice of the Italian Grand Prix
The time has expired! Carlos Sainz set the best time in the second practice session with a 1:21.664 on the soft. 0.143 seconds behind was Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. Charles Leclerc was 0.193 seconds slower than his teammate.
58
17:58
Albon and Bottas going astray
Alex Albon got lost in the gravel trap and Bottas also ended up in one of the gravel traps. “Same place,” Bottas scolds frustrated on the radio.
57
17:57
Tsunoda Incident noted
An incident involving Yuki Tsunoda has been noted. He is said not to have slowed down under yellow flags.
54
17:54
Tsunoda with the most turns
Yuki Tsunoda did the most laps in the second practice session. The Japanese has a total of 26 laps to his credit. Guanyu Zhou completed 25 laps. Sebastian Vettel gets 20 laps. He is currently doing a long run on the soft.
50
17:50
Good long runs at Verstappen
On the long runs, Max Verstappen currently sets the tone for the medium riders. The Dutchman can drive long 1:25 times and has recently added a low 1:26. Ferrari couldn’t get close in this area and Mercedes also stayed behind in the long run.
47
17:47
Pérez with brakes
Sergio Pérez should not have done his tires any favors with this. The Mexican misbrakes and thus destroys the medium sentence.
46
17:46
Albon in tenth place
Things are going better for Alex Albon, who can once again show what Williams is capable of. He ranks tenth after the fast laps. Nothing is likely to change about that, because now everyone is going into the long runs.
43
17:43
AlphaTauri not in the top ten
AlphaTauri has not yet been able to get involved in the front areas of the midfield teams. Both Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda are outside the top ten. There is not much to get from Haas either. Magnussen is in 16th place. Schumacher, who can no longer drive after the defect, is in 20th place.
42
17:43
Pit radio George Russell
George Russell informs over the radio that his Mercedes in the current set-up is significantly harder on the straights.
40
17:40

Max Verstappen is already starting his long run. The Dutchman switched back to the medium tire.
39
17:39
Vettel is far behind
Sebastian Vettel is also far behind with the soft tire. He is currently 17th. Lance Stroll finds himself in 18th place. Certainly not the start to the weekend that Aston Martin had hoped for.
37
17:38
New best lap by Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz sets a new best lap time. The Ferrari driver was able to set a 1:21.664. He takes 0.143 seconds from Max Verstappen. Charles Leclerc is third, 0.193 seconds behind his teammate.
36
17:36
Some already in the long run
While a few of the drivers still want to complete their fast laps on the soft, others have already started the long run with a lot of fuel and used tires. Among them are Lando Norris and Yuki Tsunoda.
35
17:34
Route reopened
Mick Schumacher’s car is loaded onto the truck and on its way back to the pit lane. The route is open again and the first drivers are on their way.
33
17:33
Vettel had just driven out
Sebastian Vettel had just driven out when the red flag came out. Some others might be more annoyed. Sergio Pérez, Pierre Gasly and George Russell were among those on their first flying lap.
32
17:32
Everything speaks for a technical problem
The reruns show that he appeared to be losing power. Race engineer Gary Gannon radios him to stop and park.
29
17:30
Red flag
The session will be interrupted with red flags! Unfortunately, the reason for this is a German driver. Mick Schumacher is in front of Lesmo at the edge of the track.
28
17:29
Max Verstappen’s new best lap
Max Verstappen sets a new best lap time. The Netherlands could put down a 1:21.807.
27
17:27
Vettel still in the box
For his part, Sebastian Vettel is still in the garage and has not yet started the qualifying run. All other drivers are now on the soft.
26
17:26
Norris takes third place
Lando Norris moves forward with the soft to third position. Max Verstappen meanwhile made a braking mistake. Not optimal for the fresh soft.
23
17:23
More and more on the soft
More and more drivers are steering their cars back onto the track. The qualifying tests with fresh softs and little fuel in the tank are pending.
22
17:22
Slipstream games at Haas
Haas already seems to be testing the slipstream in the direction of qualifying. Mick Schumacher plays the draft horse for Magnussen. As a result, he moves up to 13th place. Schumacher is 19.
19
17:19
Schumacher drives out again
Mick Schumacher drives out again. This time the German is on the soft. Kevin Magnussen also drove back onto the track on this mixture.
18
17:17
Most in the box
The majority of the field is currently in the pits and is preparing for the next run in the 2nd practice session. Only Bottas and Latifi do their rounds. Verstappen is in the lead with his 1:22.303. Behind them are Leclerc and Sainz.
16
17:15
Vettel in 17th place
Sebastian Vettel has just improved to 17th on the Medium, passing teammate Lance Stroll. Whether that’s all the Aston Martin can do this weekend or whether it’s on a different program to the rest of the field remains to be seen.

16:52
The weather
It got a few degrees warmer in Monza for the first training session. The air has warmed up to 27 degrees and the track temperature is 37 degrees before the 2nd practice session. Rain is still not expected.
16:47
Six penalties already known
After there was a veritable punishment orgy in Spa, there are already some well-known punishments in Monza. Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas are going backwards because of a new engine. Carlos Sainz got a new gearbox and a number of other components. Yuki Tsunoda is ten places down because of his fifth booking. Haas announced a gearbox change for Mick Schumacher on Thursday, but this has not yet been officially filed with the FIA.
16:38
German pilots in spectator role
The two German drivers Mick Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel were spectators in the first practice session. Test drivers Antonio Giovinazzi and Nyck de Vries occupied their cockpits. Both ended up far down the list of results. Lando Norris, who did not get past 16th place, should have hoped for more. Sergio Pérez was also only to be found in midfield in 14th place.
16:31
Ferrari leads 1st practice
In front of their home crowd, the Ferrari led the training session. Charles Leclerc set the best time with 1:22.410 minutes. Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari was only 0.077 seconds behind. Behind them were the Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen was fifth but was held up by Norris in the McLaren on his fast lap.
Warm welcome!
In Monza, everything is ready for the 2nd Formula 1 practice session.
