Leverkusen keeps the ball in their own ranks and lets Ferencváros run after it. The hosts have to step it up a notch for the remainder of the season to make things exciting again.

Mid-term conclusion:
Bayer Leverkusen led 1-0 against Ferencváros Budapest at half-time in this round of 16 second leg, opening the door wide towards the quarter-finals. The can opener was Diaby’s powerful run and his stone cold finish after just three minutes. After that, the Werkself managed the game for long stretches, but were lucky that Hrádecký made a strong save against Gajok after 22 minutes. Shortly before half-time, Bayer saved the bar again after a long-range shot from 16 meters, so an equalizer would not have been undeserved for the hard-working hosts. In total, however, it is 3-0 here and a lot would have to go wrong for Leverkusen to get into trouble here.

Wirtz tries to swing into the far corner on the left side of the penalty area, but his shot is parried by Dibusz with his fist.

The final phase of the first half has now begun – is something still happening here or will it only be a goal in the first 45 minutes?

Stanislav Cherchesov (Ferencvárosi TC) is shown a yellow card.
Ferencváro’s coach Stanislav Cherchesov was shown a yellow card when he was too upset by the referee’s decision on the touchline.

The bar saves for Leverkusen! Diaby loses the ball in the right half and stays on the bottom of his pants. Marquinhos grabs the ball and slides a low ball to the left on the edge of the box, where Traoré I runs up and shoots from the second row. His left shot is deflected by Tapsoba and then smacks the crossbar.
36
21:36
By the way, nothing can be heard or seen from the announced cauldron. Presumably, the goal conceded in the third minute of the game has already pulled the teeth out of the fans.
33
21:34
Next chance for Leverkusen: After a corner by Wirtz, Tapsoba climbs the highest in the center and heads on goal. Dibusz takes the ball safely and then the whistle follows because of a foul by the Leverkusen player. In the duel in the penalty area, he probably worked too hard with his arms.
31
21:33
At first, Azmoun is too stubborn in the opponent’s penalty area and doesn’t see his better positioned teammates. He is separated from the ball and Frimpong gets to the ball from a tight angle on the right side. The full-back tests Dibusz with a powerful shot, but the goalkeeper is attentive and raises his hands early enough.
30
21:31
Wirtz takes advantage of a lack of attention in Ferencváro’s defense and tries to send Diaby in deep with a pass. However, in the end there is a leg in the way and Diaby finally runs into the penalty area without the ball on his foot.
28
21:29
Mmaee gets the ball in the middle of the Leverkusen half, can open up unhindered and go a few meters towards the goal. From almost 23 meters he decides to fire a long-range shot with his strong right foot, but Hrádecký in the Werkself box doesn’t even have to intervene because the ball rushes past the goal on the right.
25
21:26
After almost 25 minutes, Leverkusen limited themselves to leisurely moving from left to right. It is clear that Ferencváros has to come, but so far it has been Gojak’s only opportunity.
22
21:25
Hrádecký must save the first time! The Finn makes himself big against Gojak and is able to parry the shot from just three meters away. Here the defense was lucky, because some had already switched off because of a supposed offside position. The assistant’s flag stays down, so the hit would have counted.
21
21:22
Diaby can actually do that better! Again he plays his speed and is through in this attack on the left flank. From there he pulls into the middle and then plays a sloppy ball halfway towards Azmoun. Because there are several defenders in between, the pass naturally doesn’t arrive and the play goes nowhere.
19
21:20
Mmaee is stopped in time after a corner and is delivered well on the border to the five. Otherwise, Ferencváros could have pulled a striker from close range and Hrádecký might not have been able to react in time.
17
21:17
After Diaby’s early opening goal, Leverkusen didn’t necessarily change gears. The Werkself are now giving the hosts more and more of the ball, but that still doesn’t do much for the Hungarians. Palacios and Andrich do Leverkusen really well with their physical style of play and have cleared everything in front of the defense without a foul.
14
21:15
Bitter for Ferencváros: Wingo is actually unable to continue playing due to an injury to his rear thigh and has to leave the field after less than 15 minutes. Marquinhos takes his place on the lawn.

11.
21:13
Bakker gets through on the left because Wingo suddenly has muscular problems in the running duel and he has to let the Leverkusen player run. Bakker’s low cross was intercepted at the first post – Azmoun had been waiting for the low pass in the centre.

21:10
Ferencváros is going offensive for the first time and that could have been dangerous! Diaby has to help out in his own penalty area and clears the ball in front of Čivić’s feet. The full-back takes the ball directly from the second row and misses the goal by almost a meter with his tight shot.
6.
21:07
It couldn’t have started any better for Leverkusen! After going behind, the hosts’ fans fell silent and Bayer immediately took over the scepter in the cauldron.

21:03
Tooor for Bayer Leverkusen, 0:1 by Moussa Diaby
This is the Werkself’s lightning start! Ferencvaros runs in front and Leverkusen overturns the entire defense with a high ball – Diaby takes the ball on the halfway line on his right side, picks up the pace and has clear speed advantages against Knoester. The Frenchman moves into the penalty area, looks in the middle to see if anyone has followed and then decides on a flat shot, which makes it 1-0 in the box.

21:01
The ball rolls! Leverkusen plays in red and black, Ferencvaros wears white jerseys with black stripes.
20:57
The atmosphere in Budapest does what it says on the tin: while the teams walk in, a choreo is performed throughout the stadium – the fans are excited for this second leg and in a few moments we will see how the players are doing on the field.
20:47
By the way, getting into the quarter-finals would bring Leverkusen a big step closer to a reunion with the Puskas-Arena. This year’s Europa League final is taking place here in Budapest. The winner will be crowned in this stadium on May 31, 2023 and Bayer will certainly do everything in their power today to remain in the running for a ticket to this final.
20:41
Ferencváros is counting on the support of the fans tonight! Around 50,000 fans are expected, including almost 400 supporters from Leverkusen. For classification: In league operations, the team plays in its own stadium, which is significantly smaller – so it is usually played in front of 7,000 spectators. Now let’s take a look at the hosts’ staff: Budapest coach Stanislav Cherchesov also makes changes compared to the first leg, benching Botka and Marquinhos in exchange for Wingo and Gojak. With Traoré I and Mmaee, the most dangerous offensive duo of the hosts is also there tonight. In the league, 22 of Budapest’s 46 goals come from these two players. Hungary’s reigning champions and league leaders suffered a setback last matchday, however, as they lost 2-1 to Puskas Akademia. The fact that Ferencvaros even played half an hour outnumbered and still couldn’t turn the game around does not necessarily encourage the clash with Bayer Leverkusen. But who knows – internationally everything is always possible!
20:29
Bayer were lucky enough to beat Bremen 3-2 last weekend and remained unbeaten in their fifth game in all competitions. There are three changes in the starting eleven again today: Adli, Hložek and Kossounou were allowed to play on the Weser from the start, making room for Azmoun, Wirtz and Tapsoba on the international stage today. Demirbay, who gave his team the lead a week ago, is on the bench at the start of today’s game. Amiri, who played in the center alongside Demirbay in the first leg, is also not in the starting XI – he is out with a muscular problem. After their yellow card suspensions, Andrich and Palacios are back in action and thus form the duo in the central midfield of the Werkself.
20:15
The Werkself won the first leg in Leverkusen 2-0 exactly a week ago and thus created a good starting position for the second leg. Demirbay (10th minute) and Tapsoba (86th minute) were successful for Bayer – but overall it was a difficult game in which both teams were hardly able to create scoring opportunities. The Bundesliga team is going into this game as favorites due to the home win, but they have to be prepared for the cauldron called the Puskas Arena. The guests are aware that they have to be ready for this, as Xabi Alonso underlined again at the press conference.
20:02
Good evening and welcome to the round of 16 second leg of the Europa League between Ferencváros Budapest and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Kick-off in Hungary’s capital is at 9 p.m.!
