Mid-term conclusion:
At the Millerntor Stadium, St. Pauli leads 2-0 against Dortmund at half-time. The Kiezkicker started like the fire brigade and surprised the Bundesliga team with a courageous and cheeky game that promptly led to an early lead at the first chance to score. It took a while before BVB accepted the fight and would have deserved the equalizer in a storm run from which Hamburg could hardly escape. In the most promising attack, Reus failed in a one-on-one on Smarsch. Just when the Black and Yellows became a little more passive, the FCSP suddenly took control again and after a strong Burgstaller cross, they were even able to make it 2-0 with a Witsel own goal. The Rose-Elf has to come up with something now.

21:29

BVB is now visibly in shock, which the Hamburgers are trying to take advantage of. The FCSP pushes the gas pedal to the limit again and senses the chance of being able to carve out another promising opportunity before half-time.

21:26

Tooor for FC St. Pauli, 2: 0 by Axel Witsel (own goal)

St. Pauli increased to 2:0! The Kiezkicker abruptly switch back to aggressive pressing, work the ball in the center and then swarm out at lightning speed. Burgstaller is through on the right and then crosses sharply into the center, where Witsel has no choice but to go with a tackle. Otherwise Amenyido would have inserted behind it in the empty goal. However, the Belgian can no longer control the ball at the high speed in reverse and involuntarily sinks the ball into his own goal. Now the task is really tough for the Bundesliga club.

39

21:25

Haaland fixes the ball on the sixteen and puts it down with a hoe for Reus, which is worth seeing. However, his pass for Hazard is also too steep and ends up in goal. Kick off St. Pauli.

37

21:23

Guerrero can’t hold the leather in a one-on-one against Irvine, who immediately discards for the moving up Becker. His pass to Burgstaller is well thought out, but also a tad too long. The experienced Austrian can no longer reach the steep pass and Kobel takes the ball safely.

35

21:22

St. Pauli has a lot more of the game again, but doesn’t even think about calming down the game or letting it cool down. The hosts play happily forward and don’t stay in midfield any longer than necessary.

32

21:18

A good half hour has passed and it almost seems as if the North Germans had survived the first offensive run by Dortmund unscathed. Increasingly, Timo Schultz’s selection is now coming back to own ball possession phases and can break free from the constant pressure.

29

21:15

Meager! After a throw-in from the Kiezkicker from the right, Hummels wants to put the ball across with his head, but heads the ball straight into the path of free Amenyido. Luckily for the world champion, Meunier is still there and pokes the leather out of the danger zone at the last second.

27

21:14

In the build-up game, Bellingham simply loses possession against Irvine, whereupon the Hamburgers counterattack. In the end, however, Hartel has to try it from a distance. The right-footed shot from 20 meters is not bad, but rushes past the kink. Kick off Dortmund.

25

21:11

Lawrence lays down Hazard, but when the ball is stationary from the right half-field, the FCSP defense is too compact for BVB to find a gap. Brandt sends Meunier right to the baseline, who has no passing station and has to stop the attack.

22

21:09

The Kiezkicker are now under extreme pressure and after the brilliant start there is hardly any relief. Hazard is through on the right wing and then looks for Haaland on the second post, which stretches but sails past the ball by a wafer. Equalization is now very much in the air.

20

21:07

BVB is here now. Again it’s a simple pass in depth, with Haaland on the ball in front of Smarsch. The keeper can be turned around by the Dortmund attacker, but then the angle for Haaland is extremely complicated. He hits the ball on goal anyway. Paqarada sprints in between and can just clear the corner, which then fizzles out.

18

21:05

Great chance Dortmund! The Black and Yellows don’t have a brilliant idea, but sometimes a high ball into the depths does it on suspicion. Hummels serves Reus in an exemplary manner in the run, but he fails from twelve meters in a one-on-one on the strong smarch, which gets his legs together at the last second and can prevent the tunnel. Strong defensive action by the Hamburg goalkeeper.

16

21:03

In the subsequent corner, Brandt looks for Hummels, who is strong in the air, but who has two opponents with him. Accordingly, the North Germans can clean up the standard situation with ease.

15

21:02

The Black and Yellows are trying, but can’t really find a playful remedy against the hosts’ poisonous style of play. Reus therefore tries his head through the wall with his individual class, but is stopped after a short dribble by Medić, who can clear the corner.

12

20:59

St. Pauli does this excellently. The Hamburg press aggressively and keep the guests on a short leash. Guerrero promptly can hardly free himself and has to play a risky pass to the outside, where Meunier misses. With their high pressing, the home side get a throw-in and regain possession of the ball. The Bundesliga team is having a really hard time in this intense initial phase.

10

20:56

The Kiezkicker keep pushing the gas pedal and play boldly forward. Burgstaller has a lot of space on the right wing and is looking for one of his three team-mates to spread out in the opposing sixteen. The BVB defense is attentive this time and can certainly clarify the cross.

7

20:54

On the other hand, BVB is now working its way dangerously forward for the first time. After Smarsch was able to punch Hazard’s shot away from eleven yards, Paqarada is there and clears the corner, which brings nothing further.

Etienne Amenyido

Tooor for FC St. Pauli, 1:0 by Etienne Amenyido

What’s going on here? The second division starts like the fire brigade and takes a 1-0 lead. Hartel gets the ball on the right side of the box and then puts it perfectly through Amenyido’s run. Although he initially slips slightly when accepting the ball, he remains in possession of the ball because Reus does not want to risk a penalty and does not really go into a duel. Without further ado, Amenyido pulls from seven meters and sinks the ball into the guest goal, which Kobel cannot hold.

The ball rolls at the Millerntor. The hosts are completely dressed in gray today. The guests from Dortmund wear their yellow jerseys over their black shorts. Here we go.

20:16

The two teams have met 23 times in a competitive game so far, with Dortmund winning the majority of their games in 17 (four draws, two defeats). In the DFB Cup, the two teams only met in the second round of the 2014/15 season. The Black and Yellows were already clear at the break and led 2-0 after goals from Ciro Immobile and Marco Reus before Shinji Kagawa made it 3-0 at the Millerntor shortly before the end of the game.

20:10

Last Friday, BVB celebrated a 5-1 home win over SC Freiburg. Coach Marco Rose is sticking to the core of his starting eleven, but rotates to three positions: Axel Witsel, Thorgan Hazard and Manuel Akanji start for Donyell Malen (bench), Emre Can (adductor injury) and Mahmoud Dahoud (not in the squad).

20:05

Bayern’s number one hunter, Borussia Dortmund, is making a guest appearance at the Millerntor tonight. The black and yellow come to the far north as second in the Bundesliga. Although BVB is six points behind FCB, they are heading for the runners-up position relatively undisturbed with an eight-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen. The Westphalians have won three of the last four league games, and they stayed on course in 2022 with two wins over Frankfurt and Freiburg and presented themselves very hungry with 8: 3 goals.

19:58

The most recent 2-2 win against Aue, in which Joker Etienne Amenyido saved his team from their first home defeat with a goal in the third minute of added time, marked the first and only loss of a point in front of a home crowd. Coach Timo Schultz reacts to this with a total of four changes. Dennis Smarsch is allowed to play in goal for Nikola Vasilj (bench). In addition, Jamie Lawrence, Finn Becker and Etienne Amenyido are preferred to Max Dittgen, Christopher Buchtmann and Philipp Ziereis (all three also from the bank).

19:51

St. Pauli missed the chance to overtake the competition in a 2-2 win at home against Erzgebirge Aue at the weekend. However, the Kiezkicker still lead the table in the 2nd Bundesliga and can dream of returning to the top tier of German football. The Hamburgers are the measure of all things, especially in the local Millerntor Stadium. With 26:7 goals, the brown-whites got 25 out of a possible 27 points at home.

Good evening and a warm welcome from Hamburg’s Millerntor Stadium. This is where FC St. Pauli welcomes Borussia Dortmund to the DFB Cup Round of 16 at 8:45 p.m. today.
