Thiem in Vienna
Thiem started Tuesday with an almost three-hour crime thriller against Tommy Paul. After losing the first set 6-2, the Lower Austrian turned the match into two tie-breaks. For the eleventh time since 2011, the 29-year-old is in the main draw of this tournament after failing to qualify in 2010. Three years ago, the right-hander managed to win this tournament. Thiem didn’t need the wildcard originally reserved for this week after he had worked his way up to 113th place in the world rankings. By the way, the protected ranking has also expired. A wild card for qualification is available for the Masters next week in Paris-Bercy.

Medvedev in Vienna
Medvedev was the 2020 ATP champion and, as the 2021 US Open winner, succeeded Thiem on the throne in Flushing Meadows. Four Masters titles are also on the books. At the tournament in Vienna, the Russian is only there for the second time. He reached the quarterfinals on his debut in 2020. This week, Medvedev, number 1 on the seeding list, enjoyed a bye at the start and is therefore playing his first match today in the round of 16.

The local hero has a difficult task to solve. Thiem is dealing with number 4 in the world. Medvedev had climbed to the top of the world rankings for the first time this year and held the place in the sun for a total of 13 weeks. The Moscow native was not allowed to compete everywhere due to the sanctions against Russian athletes. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old played four finals – including at the Australian Open and in Halle / Westphalia. But the right-hander could only win the 250 in Los Lobos, which meant his 14 tournament wins. After that, Medvedev reached the semifinals at the Masters in Cincinnati and earlier this month in Astana.
