Draper in Madrid
In Madrid, Draper is there for the first time and, as number 121 in the world, made it into the main draw thanks to a wildcard. The 20-year-old left-hander used this in the first round to win a straight two-set win against the unseeded Italian Lorenzo Sonego.

Jack Draper is pretty much a blank slate in this regard. The Englishman is still without a tournament win on the ATP tour, has only been in the main draw of a Grand Slam event (Wimbledon 2021) and has just played two Masters tournaments so far – both in Miami (2020 and 2021). The 2018 Wimbledon junior finalist hit the Challenger Tour this year, winning four tournaments there – but all on hard court.

The achievements of Rublev
During the past season, Rublev climbed to his previous top position as world No. 5. Two finals at Masters level also contributed to this, but they were lost in Monte Carlo (sand) and Cincinnati. One of the greatest successes is definitely the Olympic victory in mixed 2021. In Grand Slam tournaments, the 24-year-old has only made it to the quarter-finals at most – also on clay in Roland Garros (2020). Of his 11 tournament victories – including five in 500s – Rublev won three on red clay. Three titles have already been added this year – the 250 from Marseille, the 500 from Dubai and the brand new 250 from Belgrade on clay.

Rublev in Madrid
Andrey Rublev is only at the start in the Caja Mágica for the second time. In the debut a year ago, the Russian made it to the 3rd round. After three very tight three-set matches against the Americans Tommy Paul and John Isner, the right-hander had to give up. Rublev is number 8 in the world rankings this week and enjoyed another bye at the start. He also associates Madrid with the Davis Cup triumph in 2021, which was celebrated in the Madrid Arena.
