The officer quoted from chats found on a Google Pixel phone that was in the Renault Kadjar with which the suspects fled after the attack on July 6 last year.

An unknown man gave instructions to both suspects. They were supposed to commit the murder together, but Delano G. rejected that plan. “I’m doing it solo. I finish it. I’ll shoot that kk thing right through his kk body.” The men were sent a photo of Peter R. de Vries with the text. “You must have this dog.”

After the murder, Delano G. and Kamil E. sent an elated message to the client: “Bro, that bullet went right through his head. Twice. Everything squirted. Nice.”

The officer: “The ease and coolness with which they speak about life and death paints a macabre picture.” An investigation has shown that both men used the telephone. The messages were written in both Polish and Dutch.

The Public Prosecution Service aims for a substantive hearing of the case on 7 and 15 June, but whether that will be achieved is highly questionable. The defense of the alleged gunman Delano G. complained – again – extensively about the fact that everyone in the file is anonymous: from the eyewitnesses and the experts, to the police officers, the prosecutors and the investigating judge. According to lawyer Ronald van der Horst, it is impossible for the defense to assess for itself how reliable all those persons are, and what their motivation is. This threatens the right to a fair trial for the suspects, he says.

Van der Horst wants to be able to hear 88 witnesses himself. The Public Prosecution Service believes that the defense has insufficiently substantiated these requests.

The case continues on Thursday afternoon.
