LIVE NH Sports: FC Twente – Ajax

The first serious test for the brand new trainer John Heitinga is tonight when Ajax visits FC Twente in the eighth final of the KNVB cup tournament. Can the team from Amsterdam continue up the line and play in the last eight teams? The match can be followed live from 6.30 pm in an extra radio broadcast from NH Sport.

Ajax’s last cup match in the Grolsch Veste in 2017 turned out to be a nightmare. Ajax seemed to qualify for the next round under former coach Marcel Keizer, also in the eighth final, but saw FC Twente come alongside in injury time (1-1).

Thomas Lam received the red card in extra time, but Ajax was unable to exploit the numerical advantage. Because Hakim Ziyech and Matthijs de Ligt missed in the penalty shootout, Ajax and Marcel Keizer were killed. He was fired and succeeded by Erik ten Hag.

Lost final

FC Twente won the cup a total of three times. The last time was in 2011 and then Ajax was also put aside. Demy de Zeeuw and Lorenzo Ebecilio put Ajax on a 2-0 lead, but it became 3-2 for the Tukkers after extra time. For the last victory of Ajax against Twente in the cup tournament we have to go back to February 17, 1993 (2-4). In 1979 Ajax won the cup at the expense of FC Twente in a final over two matches: 3-0 and 1-1. In total, Ajax won the cup tournament twenty times, most recently in 2021.

This season, Ajax eliminated FC Den Bosch (0-2) in the cup without too much effort. FC Twente had little trouble with Telstar (3-1). The mutual encounter in the premier league ended in 0-0. For Devyne Rensch, that match was over after 35 minutes; he was sent off by referee Allard Lindhout, because he floored Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who had broken through. Twente had more than enough chances to win in this game, but Ajax held on.
