Again risk of supercells in northern Italy, “strong tornado threat” in Apennines
ESTOFEX, a European organization that predicts severe weather, has again issued a warning for severe weather in northern Italy today. There is a chance of very large hailstones, strong gusts of wind and even tornadoes. In the Apennines – east of Genoa and south of Milan – there is even “a strong tornado threat”.
The highest alert level (stage 3) – a rare phenomenon – is today for Slovenia, northern Croatia, southern Hungary and western Romania. According to that ESTOFEX “severe gusts of wind” that cause damage, “very large hailballs” and “to a lesser extent tornadoes”.
Northern Italy today falls under a lower warning level (stage 2), but that does not mean that the danger has passed. “The main storm line has moved to the east, but isolated storms and supercells may still form,” said ESTOFEX. “Certainly in the Apennines.”
There will be a tornado risk, especially along the western flank of the Apennines. If an isolated supercell passes through the region, strong tornado risk can be expected in such an environment.
Fortunately, there is also a bright spot: later in the day the situation should improve. That also says the the Italian Meteorological Service.
