“The siege must stop”: Hamas leader calls for storming al-Aqsa Mosque

The political leader of Hamas has called for storming and entrenching themselves in the al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem at the start of Ramadan. The month of fasting starts on March 10.

According to Arab and Israeli media, Ismail Haniyeh said this in a pre-recorded video message. He mainly addressed the Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and Israel.

“The siege of al-Aqsa must end,” it said. The mosque is one of the most important holy places for Muslims and was built at the beginning of the eighth century. Israel has already indicated that it will allow worshipers to go to the mosque, but the number will remain limited.

The building, which can accommodate 5,000 people, has also become a symbol of resistance against the Israeli occupation in modern history. It has now been going on for 57 years.

A Hamas spokesman previously called the October 7 surprise attack the “al-Aqsa flood.” He was referring to the storming of the mosque by the Israeli police in May 2021.

Several countries and Hamas are currently negotiating a second ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. That ceasefire could coincide with Ramadan.

Haniyeh said Hamas is flexible but also willing to continue fighting. The American and Egyptian presidents have spoken positively about the chances of a quick agreement.
