Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have released a new live album. Released November 25, Live at the Fillmore (1997) includes recordings from the band’s residency at the Fillmore in San Francisco, during which they played a total of 20 concerts in 1997.
“Playing at the Fillmore for a month in 1997 was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had as a musician in my life,” says Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. “The band was hot and we changed the set list every night. The room and audience were spiritually charged…AND…we got to play with some great guests. I will always look back on those evenings with joy and inspiration.”
The concert series featured Petty and the Heartbreakers playing covers by artists who had inspired Petty. The live album also contains many cover songs, including Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” or “Time is On My Side” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones. Originals by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers include “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “It’s Good To Be King.”
There will also be performances by special guests including The Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn and blues musician John Lee Hooker. Speaking at the final show at the Fillmore, Petty said, “We all have a feeling this could be the highlight of our time together as a band… It’s going to be hard to get us off this stage tonight.”
The album will be released in different versions, including a 3 LP version and a 6 LP box set with a total of 58 songs and 14 spoken word tracks with announcements by Petty. The compilation was curated by Mike Campbell and producer Ryan Ulyate. Tom Petty died in 2017 at the age of 66 from a painkiller overdose.
