‘Little England Liberated’ in Klerken about the liberation days during World War II
Visitors who passed by went on a journey through time through the turbulent year 1944. At that time, the municipality of Houthulst was nicknamed ‘Little England’ due to the many resistance activities.
In a historically correct manner, some 60 extras portray how the German occupiers retreated, how civilians managed, how the armed resistance emerged and how finally the Allies gave back our freedom.
“With this we try to commemorate the liberators and the resistance fighters and put their stories in the spotlight. The history of the resistance in particular has been forgotten by many. We try to bring this back into the spotlight with our museum and this evocation”, says Brecht Schotte of the Secret War Museum.
