Lithuania and Poland both border the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea and Russia’s ally Belarus. They are terrified of an extension of Ukrainian war violence to their territory.
Lithuania is particularly concerned about the so-called Suwalki corridor along the border with Poland. This is a narrow strip of land that separates both countries and which de facto forms the connection between Belarus and Kaliningrad.
If Russia were to conquer that strip, it could cut off Lithuania and the other Baltic states of Estonia and Latvia from the rest of the European Union and NATO territory.
Duda agrees that the Suwalki corridor requires special attention, control and concentration.
