Now the time has actually come: On Thursday, February 9th at 5:00 p.m. German time, Depeche Mode released the first single of their upcoming studio album “Memento Mori”. “Ghosts Again” — the title of the song — also received a music video, for which photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn is once again responsible.
Here you can hear the song and watch the video:
About Memento Mori
“Memento Mori” will be released on March 24, 2023. It is the band’s first album since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher. Fletcher died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022 from an aortic dissection. Depeche Mode announced “Memento Mori” in early October 2022. According to the band, the Latin title (“Recognize Your Mortality”) was set before Fletcher’s death. “The title sounds very morbid, but you can also see it in a very positive way. Live the day to the fullest, that’s how we interpret it,” said Martin Gore.
It has long been speculated that “Ghosts Again” would be chosen as the first single. This was cheered on by British DJ duo CamelPhat, who said they were working on a remix of the new single. Almost at the same time, the musicians had already played an excerpt in a live set. It was the remix of the very song that Dave Gahan and Martin Gore presented a small excerpt of at their press conference on October 14, 2022 in Berlin. At the end of January 2023, Corbijn confirmed in an interview that he had shot the video for the first single “Ghosts Again”.
