Lisanne de Witte and Lieke Klaver win World Cup gold in the relay

Lisanne de Witte and Lieke Klaver managed to return from Glasgow with a gold medal. Both sprinters (with Femke Bol and Cathelijn Peeters) raced to first place in the 4×400 meter relay at the World Indoor Athletics Championships. Tony van Diepen won bronze among the men.

It is the first time in the history of Dutch athletics that a relay team wins gold at an indoor World Championships. Klaver and De Witte, together with Cathelijn Peeters and Femke Bol, ran to victory in the final in a time of 3.25.07. The United States team won the silver medal and the bronze medal went to Great Britain. Klaver took her second place, after taking silver on Saturday.

Van Diepen wins bronze

Alkmaar resident Tony van Diepen won a bronze medal with the relay men at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow, just like two years ago. Belgium, with brand new world champion Alexander Doom as the final runner, extended the title in a time of 3:02.54.

The United States team won silver in 3:02.60. Van Diepen, Liemarvin Bonevacia, Ramsey Angela and Terrence Agard ran the entire final in third position. Their time of 3:04.25 was a great Dutch record.

Nadine Visser did not reach the final of the 60 meter hurdles at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow. The North Holland woman hit the first hurdle and was therefore so out of balance that she only finished eighth and last in her heat of the semi-finals in a time of 8.42.

“I’m completely empty for a moment,” said an emotional Visser in the catacombs of the Emirates Arena. “I don’t know exactly, but when this happens, you are often too close to the first hurdle. It happened to me earlier this season in Liévin.”

Finish early

Pole vaulter Menno Vloon from Zaandam returns from Glasgow without a medal. He stranded at a height of 5.65 meters and therefore finished eighth in the final.
