Axl Rose’s performance at Lisa Marie Presley’s funeral may have been less improvised than thought. The Guns N’ Roses singer said she asked him to play “November Rain” at her memorial service in the event of her death.

First he gave a eulogy to his girlfriend. “I know that Lisa loved her family very much and was very protective of her father and his legacy,” said the 60-year-old. That Presley was really going to die any time soon? Completely unthinkable for him. “I couldn’t have imagined in a million years being here and singing under these circumstances.” He then performed a piano version of “November Rain”.

After the memorial service, he said: “I didn’t really know if I was going to give a speech. I still feel like I don’t deserve to be here. But I wanted to please her, her family and the fans.” The performance meant a lot to the musician and cost him strength. “I was pretty nervous and emotional about it,” he said. He added that Presley has talked about him performing at their funerals. “That’s why I was asked to play the song. So of course I had to be here.”

Presley and Rose were good friends. The singer helped her get over the loss of her son in 2020. To cheer her up, he wrote to her a lot and sent her animal videos.

The memorial service was held publicly on January 22 in the garden of the Graceland family home. Presley was previously buried surrounded by her family. She died on January 12 after being rushed to a hospital for heart failure. Her mother, Priscilla Presley, gave the cause of death as cardiac arrest. Officially, the investigations are still ongoing – a coroner called for further medical tests after her death.
