The comedy series ‘Friends’ has received a lot of criticism in recent years for its lack of diversity. For example, there is not a single actor with a darker skin color in the main cast. The finger of blame was pointed at the creators, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, but in a recent interview with ‘The Daily Beast’, ‘Friends’ actress Lisa Kudrow defended the duo: “I feel like this show was written by two people who wanted to write about their own lives after college. Especially for shows, when it becomes a comedy that is character driven, you write down what you know. They wrote about things they knew themselves.” The actress added that she also did not think it was their job to tell about the experiences of people with a different skin color. “They have no business writing stories about the experiences of a person of color.”

Actress Lisa Kudrow, who plays the role of Phoebe Buffay, has previously spoken about the matter. In 2020, she admitted to ‘The Sunday Times’ that the series would look very different if it were made today. “Friends” had been much more diverse and “the show hadn’t had an all-white cast”.

Apologies

The comedy series ‘Friends’ was shown on television from 1994 to 2004, but remains one of the most popular series of all time to this day. However, society has changed enormously over the years. Kauffman now realizes this himself. She apologized in an interview with BBC. “I have to say that the lack of diversity was unfortunately my own fault. I was clearly a part of systematic racism in our industry. The fact that I wasn’t even aware of that makes me feel really stupid. The lack of diversity in the show is a fair comment, which makes me emotional.” She would do things very differently now. “I didn’t know any better, but I learned a lot.” She added to The Los Angeles Times: “From now on, I will make sure that I am consciously hiring people of color and actively looking for young writers of color in every production I make. .”
