Lip oil, the alternative to glosss. What is it and how to apply it

Stand on Tik Tok the lip oil has become so viral as to conquer 1.5 billion views, there must be a reason. It is, in fact, a hybrid and transversal product, halfway between color and treatment, able to satisfy different needs. This summer it will be a real must-have. At least among those looking for a shine effect with just a veil of color. And the proposals to try are many and always new.

Lip oil, balm and gloss: the differences

But let’s go in order. Why choose a lip oil and not a balm or a lipgloss? Lip oil: the ingredients to look for in the INCI

Among the most popular ingredients of the latest generation lip oils is thecherry oil. To use it is, for example, Rihanna in the formula of Cherry Treat Conditioning + Strengthening Lip Oil of its brand Fenty Beauty, based on Sweet Cherry Seed Oil, Barbados Cherry and Wild Cherry extracts. But also the house Dior with his Addict Lip Glow Oil which incorporates a cherry oil with protective and energizing virtues.

«Cherry oil is obtained from a waste part of the fruit, i.e. the stone – explains cosmetologist Antonella Antonini -, and it is one of the most powerful emollient ingredients for soft, smooth and elastic skin». Not surprisingly, there are also several DIY recipes.

A valid alternative to cherry oil is to rosehip used by clarins for its Lip Comfort Oil: it is extracted from the seeds of the plant and gives the lip mucosa hydration, protection and nourishment. In Latin America it is also used in the medical field.

Hyaluronic acid: also essential in lip oils

Alongside the vegetable oils, the new lip oils incorporate the cosmetic ingredient par excellence, i.e. thehyaluronic acid.

«The one with a high molecular weight boasts film-forming virtues that make it perfect for retaining water and, consequently, the hydration of tissues and mucous membranes, thus avoiding its dispersion – says the cosmetologist -. While the low molecular weight one penetrates deeper stimulating the production of new hyaluronic acid by our body».

Thus the lips appear full and plumped without having to resort to lip plumper which volumize them with the rubefacient action of menthol and chilli pepper.

Lip oil: how to use it

The lip oil it can be reapplied several times during the day to renew comfort and hydration. Furthermore, being only slightly pigmented, it gives a discreet and unobtrusive tint.

Be careful, though, because unlike the gloss, not all lip oils can be applied over lipstick or pencil to make them brighter. In fact, it depends on the composition. If the textures is particularly oily, the risk is what the lipstick underneath does not settle and migrate into the wrinkles. If, on the other hand, it is in gel, it can be used as a gel top coat.

To prepare the lips for make-up, however, experts recommend proceeding with a sugary scrub and then with the lip oil, the excess of which should be removed after about ten minutes and before applying the lipstick.
