The Dutch women’s football team is ready for the European championship. The quarterfinals turned out to be the final destination for the title holder, including Daniëlle van de Donk from Valkenswaard, Jackie Groenen from Goirle and PSV attacker Esmee Brugts. The Lionesses lost 1-0 to France on Saturday evening, after extra time.

The only goal of the game in English Rotherham fell in the final phase of the first half of that extension. Dominique Janssen unnecessarily caused a penalty kick, from which Evi Périsset opened the score.

Earlier in the game and especially in the first half of regular time, the Dutch had already got through the eye of the needle several times. The post, Stefanie van der Gragt and the strong goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, among others, were already in the way of a first French goal.

The reigning European champion and the losing 2019 World Cup finalist had nothing to contribute for a long time. After the break, the team of national coach Mark Parsons managed to bite off better. She was also given space a few times to create danger, but there were no opportunities. France ruled much less. As both teams failed to score, extra time went into extra time. And in this the penalty used by Périsset was the deciding factor.

This brought an inglorious end to the European Championship adventure for the selection of Parsons. She had to contend with quite a few bad luck, such as the failure of captain Sari van Veenendaal, the keeper who plays for PSV. Aniek Nouwen from Deurne lost her starting spot due to an injury. Jacky Groenen was not available for a few days because she had contracted corona. The Bredase Caitlin Dijkstra also belonged to Parsons’ group.
