Lionel Richie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday November 5th. At the recording ceremony, Richie played a total of three songs and got celebrity support: He performed the Commodores hit “Easy” together with Dave Grohl.
Richie began his performance alone with his backing band with the ballad “Hello” (1983). He then played “Easy” (1977) by the Commodores, which he co-founded in 1968. The Foo Fighters frontman came on stage to perform the guitar solo. Richie was apparently also carried away by Grohl’s playing: At the end he got up from the grand piano and sang the last chorus in turns with Grohl at the front of the stage.
Lenny Kravitz gave the awards speech, saying Richie “was like a big brother to me.” Richie later spoke about his experiences as a black man in the music industry. “Rock and roll isn’t a color — it’s a feeling,” he said. “It’s a vibe… and if we allow that vibe to come through, this space will grow and grow and grow.”
It’s not the first time Richie and Grohl have worked together: In February 2022, Richie made a cameo appearance in “Studio 666”. The horror comedy is based on a story written by Grohl, and all the Foo Fighters also play in the film. Eminem, Dolly Parton and Judas Priest were also inducted into the Hall of Fame at the same time as Richie.
