Lionel Messi has won the 2023 Ballon d’Or, the Golden Ball.
The Argentinian picked up the prestigious award given by France Football magazine for the eighth time in his career. That’s more than anyone else.
Last year the Ballon d’Or went to Karim Benzema, but before that Messi celebrated the selection in 2021, 2019, 2015, 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009.
The Ballon d’Or is now awarded based on the merits of an entire football season instead of a calendar year. The players were now evaluated based on the 2022–23 season.
At that time, Messi was still playing for the French PSG, where he scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists during the season.
However, the Konkari striker’s biggest merit last season was the world championship in Argentina’s shirt. He led the team to its first World Cup gold since 1986.
