Jordi Alba, Messi’s former teammate at FC Barcelona, also dropped out prematurely with an injury. Despite the withdrawal of the two stars, Miami managed to win the match 4-0.
Messi missed Argentina’s international match against Bolivia and the league match against Atlanta United last week. Fatigue was then cited as the reason. According to Martino, Messi was taken off as a precaution against Toronto. The coach said the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will miss Sunday’s game against Orlando City and is a doubt for next Wednesday’s American Cup final against Houston Dynamo. “He doesn’t come near the field when he’s not fit. We are careful,” said Martino.
