In view of the high energy prices, the Berlin left calls for an “electricity protection shield” for customers of the public utility company.
Around 40,000 people are now getting their green electricity from the Berliner Stadtwerke, said Left Party leader Anne Helm on Saturday at a state party conference.
“Normally, the letters of increase would go out in October because of the exploding electricity prices. The Stadtwerke’s profit makes it possible for prices not to have to be increased.”
If there is an opportunity to set up at least one “electricity protection screen” for this part of Berlin’s electricity customers, this must also be used, according to Helm. For all other electricity customers, the federal government had to decide on an electricity price cap, she demanded.
The proposal for a protective shield for municipal electricity customers in Berlin is new in a long line of ideas and demands to relieve people of the exorbitantly high energy costs. In order to be implemented, there would have to be talks and an agreement in the red-green-red coalition.
The public utilities are currently benefiting from high electricity prices, even though they offer green electricity that comes from renewable sources instead of expensive fossil sources such as gas or coal.
