Lineth Beerensteyn dedicates goal in exhibition game Oranje Leeuwinnen to deceased mother | Dutch football

For the tenth time in succession, the Orange Lionesses have beaten Denmark. In Zwolle, the formation of national coach Andries Jonker won 2-0 in the reprise of the 2017 European Championship final. It was the 26th time that the Netherlands and Denmark faced each other.

Just like in the last two meetings with the football players from Denmark, in the fall of 2018 – playoffs for a World Cup ticket (2-0 and 2-1) – Lineth Beerensteyn was one of the goalscorers. In Zwolle she cut herself pretty free in the sixteen-meter area and chased the ball hard into the long corner. It was a goal with a lot of emotional value for the Juventus striker. She pointed upwards with two fingers immediately after her goal, as a tribute to her mother who died last month.

Jonker ‘just’ lined up keeper Daphne van Domselaar again tonight in Zwolle, after he had given Lize Kop the chance on Friday. Sherida Spitse was a standout in the five-head defense. Lieke Martens played around Beerensteyn as second striker and thus made her first Orange minutes since the disappointing European Championship and under Jonker, after she was rested in the previous international period and was still missing on Friday due to knee problems.

Her return could not be called remarkable: after 45 minutes she was relieved by Jill Baijings as agreed in advance. At that time, the Lionesses were ahead after a fairly bloodless first half thanks to a lucky goal from Dominique Janssen, who also scored against Costa Rica. She accidentally ran into a tight free kick from Spitse and put the Orange Women ahead. After the break, Jonker’s team distanced itself further from World Cup participant Denmark (number 18 in the FIFA world ranking) due to Beerensteyn’s emotionally charged goal.

With two fine victories in a 5-3-2 formation, Jonker will probably see salvation in that system as an alternative to the familiar 4-3-3. This week he wanted to conclude – after things did not go well in the previous international period – whether it could be an option for the Orange Women at and towards the World Cup next summer in New Zealand and Australia. 4-0 against Costa Rica and 2-0 against Denmark: the numbers tell the story.
