linesman is a blood mask in Betis-Atletico Bilbao

The assistant referee collided with a camera after Avila’s goal: during the match she was replaced by the fourth official

The image is scary. And – given that times unfortunately too often tell bad stories – the first thought goes to an act of violence. But this time the accident that transformed the face of a Spanish guard into a mask of blood has a completely different origin. In fact, the woman was forced to leave the pitch after 15 minutes of Betis-Atletico Bilbao due to a completely random and unusual injury.

the accident

After Ezequiel Avila scored Betis 1-0, linesman Guadalupe Porras was left injured on the ground. While she was running to follow the action she crashed into a camera, clearly injuring her face. The woman immediately had to leave the field (replaced by the fourth man) to be rescued. The images, captured live on TV, inevitably made the rounds on the web.
