Lindner needs another 35 billion euros in new debt – magazine

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones) — Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) plans additional debts of around 35 billion euros for this year’s supplementary budget. According to information from the news magazine Spiegel, this is based on the current status of the planning by the Federal Ministry of Finance. Lindner needs the funds to finance the latest relief packages for citizens and businesses against the effects of the Ukraine war. Among other things, the Germans are to receive heating cost subsidies, energy taxes are to be reduced and a one-off surcharge on child benefit is also planned. Humanitarian aid to Ukraine is also financed from it.

A spokesman for the federal Treasury Department told Dow Jones Newswires that the department, as usual, does not comment on individual reports.

In addition to the supplementary budget, Lindner is already planning new debt of almost 100 billion euros for 2022 and a loan-financed special fund for the Bundeswehr of the same amount. On Friday, the Bundestag discussed the Federal Government’s budget plans for the current year. Lindner wants to bring the supplementary budget to the Federal Cabinet on April 27th.
