MESEBERG (dpa-AFX) – Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner is examining a new instrument to better enforce sanctions against Russian oligarchs. Lindner said on Wednesday after the cabinet meeting in Meseberg that it was being checked whether those who were on sanctions lists could be legally obliged to disclose assets. This would be associated with fines and would also be subject to criminal prosecution. That would be a whole new instrument to make existing sanctions more effective, said Lindner.

The head of the FDP had already announced that he wanted to remedy “implementation deficits” in the enforcement of sanctions against Russian companies and oligarchs. The tracking of assets must be improved in order to be able to effectively enforce sanctions. There are legislative requirements. To implement the sanctions against Russian companies and oligarchs, the federal government has set up a task force from various authorities.
