Finland’s top soccer player Linda Sällström faced outrageous behavior with her team Vittsjö GIK during the Swedish Cup match.
Sällström, 35, says on his Instagram account that he and his teammates encountered aggressive behavior and received misogynistic insults on their necks from the opponent’s Gothenburg fans.
The yelling and swearing continued for more than 90 minutes. Vittsjö GK won the match 5–0. Sällström scored one goal.
– I am sad and disappointed that it was allowed to continue throughout the match, Sällström writes.
– It was very rough language that really does not belong anywhere – neither in our workplaces nor in any other society, Sällström continues.
Sällström wonders why the shouting was allowed to continue, even though the players and referees heard the insults.
– I’m sure that every person in the stands heard them. I hope there were no children to witness this.
Sällström walked to the booers after the match, but it didn’t help.
– I only encountered more insults.
He continues that football should be a safe place for everyone. He doesn’t understand how people can behave like this.
Helmarien’s goal gun hopes that the people in question will receive some sanctions and that it will be made clear to them that insulting is not acceptable.
– I refuse to accept this kind of behavior.
Sällström is the all-time top scorer in the history of the Finnish national football team. Sällström has scored 59 hits for Helmarei.
In December, he signed a two-year contract extension with Vittsjö GK.
