Limburger retires after years as museum director Boijmans | 1Limburg

Kerkrade resident Sjarel Ex will retire next autumn as director of the Rotterdam museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Since 2004, Ex has been responsible for artistic and business matters for the museum.

Crown on work
De Kerkrade, who has worked together with co-director and co-director Ina Klaassen in recent years, requested the supervisory board to now terminate his current contract. He will continue his career as an independent researcher and exhibition maker, according to the museum.

The museum is expected to be closed until 2028 for renovation, but it does show the collection in a high-profile depot that has been built next door and is attracting international attention. It is regarded as the crown on the work of the Kerkrade resident.

‘Visionary’
Co-director Klaassen calls him ‘first and foremost a visionary with guts’. “His idiosyncratic view and inspired approach have fueled and propelled the growth that the museum has gone through.”

art world
There are more dropouts in the art world this week. Charles de Mooij will retire after fifteen years as director of Het Noordbrabants Museum. Jacqueline Grandjean succeeds him. The board of the Rembrandt Association has appointed Geert-Jan Janse as its new director. He succeeds the current director Fusien Bijl de Vroe, who is retiring.
